I found the article about AI being able to take a photo and generate a pattern super interesting. Perhaps this is a subconscious fear giving me too much reassurance, but I don't think AI will be able to take over that job completely. Patternmaking is just as much art as science. I've been learning lately how even moving a pattern line half a centimetre can change the way a garment hangs or looks dramatically, so I think there will always be room for human taste and finesse. Especially since each body is so different! What I could see happening is AI removing the need for mid-level pattern makers, so the bulk of the work is done via technology, and then somebody comes in and polishes it. Fast fashion companies wouldn't care about the extra polish, but couture and art- and craft-focused brands would.

I guess time will tell! I wonder how complex a pattern an AI could generate, and if (like photos or text) it would be possible to tell the difference between an AI generated pattern and a human made one?

AI paired with body scanning could potentially make very well-fitting clothes.

Liz, I am so sorry to hear you are still suffering from Long-Covid. I can imagine your frustration not being able to achieve all the things you wish to do. I love both your books. They stand proudly on the bookshelf in my sewing room and I often refer to them. May 2024 bring good health and vibrancy back into your life. Cheers Lenore. X

Hi Lenore, thank you for your kind words. Yes, there are a lot of things I miss doing but I accept that this is a season and will pass like others. Thanks for getting my books and Happy New Year to you and family.

I've got the first edition of Zero Waste Fashion Design - is there much difference between the two?

Thanks, and I hope you feel better soon,

Anne

Hi Anne, that was what I wanted to know too! I've only had a cursory flip-through, but it appears that the second ed has a little extra content including some more interviews and a bit more on using digital tools to create zw patterns. Same number of pages. You can compare the contents pages on the publishers site: https://www.bloomsbury.com/au/search/?q=Zero%20Waste%20Fashion%20Design

So the question is: if you have the first edition, do you need the second? So hard to answer! I would say for myself that the first edition is fine enough keep on my bookshelf, and the second edition is worth looking through and I will probably save it as a gift for someone.

Thanks Liz! I'll keep an eye out in case my library buys it so I can see the differences.

Considering that I'm in the last stages of moving house (apart from unpacking) - which has brought home how much fabric, books, yarn and fibre I have - I really don't need any more books 😂
